How faculty can support campus alcohol
and abuse prevention efforts:

(Research indicates that faculty involvement makes a difference!)

  • Direct address alcohol and drugs in content-appropriate ways-links to discipline specific ideas curriculum Infusion
  • Refrain from joking about heavy drinking.  Comments on Monday mornings such as "sobered up yet?" implicitly support the idea that heavy drinking is normative and OK.
  • Refrain from "war stories" about your own college drinking.  Many students view these types of stories as glorifying drinking and implying that all college students drink.  If it is appropriate to class content, you may wish to note if alcohol negatively affected you.
  • Serve as a role model.  Having students over to your house? Going out after class? Serve non-alcohol drinks and meet in places other than bars.
  • Have to miss a class? Schedule peer educators presentations Reach and Share
  • Reclaim Thursdays and Fridays as academic days – Schedule morning classes and quizzes
  • Extra credit – Give extra credit for attendance at alcohol & other drug (AOD) related workshops, presentations, etc.
  • Set class standards – In syllabus, indicate that coming to class “under the influence” is unacceptable
  • Know the magnitude of the problem - Familiarize yourself with the national and UW-L data
  • Other ideas? Speak out and write on the topic, do research in the area, serve on committees regarding alcohol policy, etc., promote alcohol free events. Let your colleagues know about your role in alcohol abuse prevention - include these types of activities in your summary sheets regarding teaching, service and research.
