Fanta and Lauersdorf Named WIAC Players of the Week

Madison, Wis. – UW-La Crosse freshman third baseman Jay Fanta of Viroqua (H.S.) and freshman right-handed pitcher Zach Lauersdorf of Watertown (H.S.) have been named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Players of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Fanta went 8-for-20 (.400) in five games with six runs scored and three RBI as UW-La Crosse posted five victories. He added two doubles and drew three walks. Fanta went 4-for-8 with four runs scored and a double in UW-La Crosse's sweep of UW-Stout May 3.

He recorded at least one hit in all five contests to extend his hitting streak to nine games.

Lauersdorf went 2-0 on the week with a 1.12 earned run average. He earned wins over Viterbo University (Wis.) and UW-Stout. Against Viterbo April 28, he pitched 8.0 innings, allowed three hits, one run and one walk, while recording five strikeouts. Lauersdorf was perfect through five innings and didn't allow a hit until two outs in the seventh.

He came back to pick up a win over UW-Stout May 3, going 8.0 innings and allowed five hits, three runs and two walks, while striking out seven.

UW-L returns to action Friday, May 8 against UW-Oshkosh at the WIAC Tournament. The first pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. at UW-Whitewater.
