Diehl Starts Competition at NCAA III Championships

Minneapolis, Minn. - University of Wisconsin-La Crosse junior Matt Diehl of Prairie du Sac (Sauk Prairie) competed in the 50 freestyle preliminaries Wednesday morning at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Swimming & Diving Championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Diehl tied for 27th in the preliminaries (20.86), but failed to qualify for Wednesday night's final.

Kenyon College leads the men's standings after the first day with 154.0 points. Emory University is second (101.0) followed by St. Olaf College (78.0), Grove City College (43.0) and UW-Stevens Point (38.0) to round-out the top-five.

Diehl will compete in the 100 breaststroke Friday, March 20 and in the 100 freestyle Saturday, March 21.

He has four career NCAA III All-America awards, all coming in 2007. He was a member of UW-L's seventh-place 200 freestyle relay as well as the 11th-place 400 freestyle relay, 14th-place 400 medley relay and 14th-place 800 freestyle relay.
