UW-L Finishes Second at Wartburg Select; Riley Wins Discus and Shot Put

Waverly, Iowa – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men’s track and field opened its 2009 outdoor season with a second-place finish at the Wartburg College Select Saturday afternoon. The Eagles finished with 134.5 points while Augustana College (Ill.) took first with 173.75. The University of St. Thomas, Minn. was third (130.25) followed by UW-Platteville (98.0), Wartburg (85.5), Simpson College, Iowa (77.0) and Loras College, Iowa (66.0).
Five student-athletes captured individual events Saturday, including Bobby Riley who won two events. He took first in the discus throw with an NCAA Division III automatic qualifying mark of 173-7 and also won the shot put with a provisional qualifying throw of 55-2 3/4.
Al Chery captured the high jump (6-5 1/2) and Jason Prochnow the pole vault (15-5). Prochnow met provisional qualifying status for the national meet.
On the track, Matt Gordy took the 100-meter dash (10.89) and Paul Zdroik the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:29.57).
Other top finishes on the track for UW-L included: Brad Peterson second in the 400-meter hurdles (54.71) and Zach Lee fourth in the 100-meter dash (11.04). Ryan Mendez finished sixth in the 400-meter dash (50.39), Sean Harrington was sixth in the 5,000-meter run (15:29.39), Scott Spexarth placed sixth in the 110-meter hurdles (15.81) and Broc Vike was sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:01.45).
UW-L also finished fifth in the 4x400-meter relay (3:24.64).
In field events, David Stauder was third (6-3 1/2) and Nick Stone fifth (6-1 1/2) in the high jump while Jeremiah Burish tied for fifth in the pole vault (14-5 1/4). Erik Rasmussen finished tied for third in the shot put (47-2 1/4) while Luke Crowley was fifth (45-6 1/4). Crowley also placed third in the discus (157-8) and provisionally qualified for the national championships. Bill Warren was fifth in the discus (144-3) and sixth in the hammer (155-5).
