UW-L Wins Wartburg Select; Five Athletes Capture Individual Events

Waverly, Iowa - The UW-La Crosse men's track & field team captured the five-team Wartburg College Indoor Select Meet Saturday afternoon in Waverly. The Eagles finished with 211.50 team points while the University of St. Thomas, Minn. was second with 174.0. UW-Platteville placed third (119.0) followed by Wartburg, Iowa (90.5) and Buena Vista University, Iowa (43.0).
Five athletes earned individual titles Saturday, including three on the track. Matt Gordy took the 55-meter dash (6.47) while Zach Wilhelmy won the 3,000-meter run (8:36.26) and Phill Hernandez the 5,000-meter run (15:27.24).
In the field events, Dave Stauder captured the high jump (6-8 1/4) and Jessie Dengsavang the triple jump (46-5 1/4).
Gordy, Stauder and Dengsavang all provisionally qualified for the NCAA III Championships with their winning marks.
Other provisional qualifers incluced Jamar Jackson placing second in the 55-meter hurdles (7.68) and Luke Crowley second in the weight throw (54-9 1/4).
UW-L had three runners in the top-five in the 200-meter dash as Alex Rooker finished second (22.64), Terrence Thigpen third (23.02) and Brad Peterson fifth (23.05). Peterson was also fifth in the 400-meter dash (51.71) while teammate Ryan Mendez finished second (50.99).
Josh Kaul was second in the 5,000-meter run (15:40.01) for the Eagles while Connor Lonning finished third (8:42.85) and Logan O'Grady fourth (8:50.92) in the 3,000-meter run. Zach Lee placed fourth in the 55-meter dash (6.54). UW-L's 4x400-meter relay finished second (3:24.75).
In the field events, Phil Warren placed second (49-11 1/4) and Andy Novak third (46-1 1/2) in the shot put while Aaron Johnson was third in the weight throw (53-8 1/4). Jason Prochnow tied for third in the pole vault (14-5 1/4) and Erik Moser was fifth (14-5 1/4).
The Eagles' Chad Heemstra was third in the triple jump (43-2 1/4) and Jordan Young placed fourth in the long jump (20-8). Clark Lundquist finished fourth (6-3 1/2) and Nick Stone fifth (6-3 1/2) in the high jump.
