UW-L Earns Scholar Team Award; Five Individuals Honored

La Crosse, Wis. - The UW-La Crosse wrestling team finished 25th on the list of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Top-25 Scholar Teams for the 2008-09 season. The Eagles compiled a 3.173 team grade point average. Williams College (Mass.) ranked first with a 3.545 grade point average while Rochester Institute of Technology (N.Y.) was second at 3.507 and Washington & Lee University (Va.) third at 3.463.

Along with the team honors, UW-L had five wrestlers named to the NWCA Division III Scholar All-America Team. Matt Mauseth (149-pounds, biology major, 3.37 grade point average); Dan Schulte (174, exercise and sport science, 3.30); Josh Zabel (184, exercise and sport science, 3.39); Andy Moore (197, biology, 3.28) and Dan Laurent (285-pounds, biochemistry, 3.92) were all selected to the team.

Third-year head coach Dave Malecek led the Eagles to a third-place finish at the 2009 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Championships March 6-7 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Mauseth and Laurent both captured individual national titles this season while Zabel placed third and Moore fourth. All four earned All-America honors.

UW-L captured its 12th consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) title earlier this season.
