UW-L Wins Home Opener; Eagles Record Four Pins

La Crosse, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team opened its 2008-09 home schedule with a 43-6 victory over North Iowa Area Community College Wednesday night in Mitchell Hall. It was the opening dual for both squads. UW-L is ranked fifth in the NCAA Division III while NIACC is second in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

The Eagles earned four victories by fall, one by technical fall and two by major decision in their nine wins.

Jonny Brennan opened the dual with a win by decision (8-7) over NIACC's Matt Desharnais at 125-pounds. The Trojans picked up their lone victory at 133-pounds as Cody Hogan won by fall (1:13) over the Eagles' Gus Green. Hogan is ranked first in the NJCAA.

UW-L then won the final eight matches. Alex Dahl at 141 and Matt Mauseth at 149 earned back-to-back wins by fall. Dahl defeated Stoney Stuart (4:28) while Mauseth beat Wyatt Blake (6:17). Mauseth is ranked first in NCAA Division III at 149-pounds.

Nolan Hammel earned a win by decision (6-1) at 157-pounds for UW-L over Matt Manning and Cory Ferguson picked up a victory by technical fall, 16-0 (3:49) over Brett Rosedale at 165-pounds. Rosedale is ranked eighth in the country for NIACC.

The Eagles' Dan Schulte won by fall (1:55) over the Trojans' Tyler Hancock at 174-pounds. UW-L's Josh Zabel and Andy Moore picked up wins by major decision scores of 15-4 for UW-L. Zabel, ranked fourth in the country, defeated Preston Poyner at 184-pounds while Moore defeated Luke Stika at 197. Moore is ranked sixth in NCAA III.

Dan Laurent finished the dual with a win by fall (2:02) over Zach Rosol at 285-pounds. Laurent, the defending national champion at 285, is ranked first in the country.

UW-L returns to action Saturday, November 22 at the Olivet College (Mich.) Duals and at the Auggie Open in Minneapolis, Minn.
