UW-L Competes at Nichols Open; Zabel Places Second

Ames, Iowa – The UW-La Crosse wrestling team competed at the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open Saturday at Iowa State University. No team scores were kept.
The Eagles' Josh Zabel finished second at 184-pounds with a 4-1 record. Zabel, the third seed for the tournament at 184, opened with a 3-2 victory over Casen Eldredge (Utah Valley University) 3-2 before earning a technical fall victory (17-2) over Brian Drake (Iowa Central Community College). He then defeated sixth-seed Joe Curran (Iowa State) 9-4 and picked up a forfeit win over Jerome Ward (Iowa State) to advance to the title match. Zabel fell 7-2 to top-seed Vince Jones (unattached) in the championship match.
Other results for UW-L included Pat Parrillo going 1-2 at 133-pounds while Alex Dahl was 2-2 at 141. Justin Garcia went 0-2 at 141-pounds. At 149, Ryan Farwell finished 2-2 while Bobby Dorn and Zeb Secrist each finished 0-2.
The Eagles' Nolan Hammel finished 0-2 at 157-pounds while Jake Gosch went 2-2 at 165. UW-L's Jeff Erkel was 1-2 at 174-pounds and Dan Schulte 0-2 while Dan Laurent was 2-2 at 285-pounds.
