UW-L Opens Season at Pointer Open; Lauren Captures Individual Title

Stevens Point, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team opened its 2008-09 season at the Pointer Open Saturday at UW-Stevens Point. No team scores were recorded.
In the gold division of the open, the Eagles' Dan Laurent captured the 285-pound title with a 4-0 record. After a first round bye, he defeated Mike Delaney (unattached) by fall at 1:51. Laurent then earned a 6-1 victory over Zak Saevre (Northern Illinois) and 4-0 victory over Jared Carder (Coe) in the semifinals. He won the title by decision by the score of 8-2 over Dakota Greenhaw (Northern Illinois).
Josh Zabel placed third at 184-pounds for UW-L with a record of 4-1. He recorded one win by fall.
In other results, Jordan Foy went 0-2 and Justin Dixon 2-2 at 133-pounds. The Eagles' Kevin Barber was 1-2 at 141 while Alex Dahl finished with a record of 3-2. At 149-pounds, Ryan Farwell and Matt Mauseth both went 2-2 while Zeb Secrist finished 4-2. Jake Gosch went 0-2 and Cory Ferguson 1-2 at 165-pounds for UW-L while Jeff Erkel finished 0-2 at 174. At 197-pounds, Andy Moore finished 2-2.
In the silver division Saturday, three UW-L wrestlers placed. Grant Miller finished third at 174-pounds with a 5-1 record, earning three wins by fall. The Eagles' Justin Garcia and Cody Freimoth both placed fourth as Garcia went 4-2 at 141-pounds and Freimoth finished 6-2 at 157 with one fall.
UW-L's Jon Brennan went 2-2 at 125-pounds while Gus Green finished 2-2 at 133. The Eagles' Adam Theisen finished 0-2 at 141, Bobby Dorn was 3-2 at 149 and Nolan Hammel went 1-2 at 157.
