UW-L Falls to Tenth-Ranked UW-Whitewater

La Crosse, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team fell 28-13 to UW-Whitewater Tuesday night in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles, ranked fifth in NCAA Division III, fell to 9-2 overall and 1-1 in the WIAC while the Warhawks, ranked 10th in the country, improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the league.
The Eagles forfeited at 125 and 165-pounds after team members were suspended due to breaking team rules. Josh Miller received a forfeit at 125-pounds for the Warhawks and Brendan Barrett picked up the win at 165.
UW-Whitewater took five of the eight contested matches Tuesday night. Kyle Wachholder won by decision (6-4) over Gus Green at 133-pounds to give the Warhawks a 9-0 lead. Austin Bautista, ranked first in NCAA III at 141-pounds, made it 12-0 with a win by decision (10-3) over UW-L's Kevin Barber.
UW-L cut the deficit to 12-6 as Zeb Secrist won by fall (1:35) over Matt Schuck at 149-pounds, but UW-Whitewater's Tom Trieloff gave the Warhawks a 15-6 lead with a win by decision (12-7) over Ryan Farwell.
After the forfeit at 165 to give UW-Whitewater a 21-6 lead, the Eagles Dan Schulte won by decision (3-2) over Pat Nagel at 174-pounds. Nagel entered the dual ranked sixth in NCAA Division III at 165-pounds.
Josh Zabel, ranked fourth in the country, cut the lead 21-13 for UW-L after winning by major decision (12-4) over David Casper. UW-Whitewater then took the final two matches over UW-L's two nationally ranked wrestlers. Karl Voeck won by major decision (12-3) over sixth-ranked Andy Moore at 197 and Jon Schmidt won by decision (7-3) over top-ranked Dan Laurent at 285. Voeck improved to 11-1 on the season with his victory while Schmidt is now 7-0. Laurent, the defending NCAA III champion, fell to 16-3 on the season.
UW-L returns to action Thursday, Dec. 11 at ninth-ranked Luther College (Iowa) at 7 p.m.
