UW-L Wins Seventh Straight over Viterbo

La Crosse, Wis. The UW-La Crosse women's basketball team opened its 2008-09 home schedule with a 79-60 victory over city-rival Viterbo University Tuesday night in Mitchell Hall in the 17th Annual Wells Fargo Alumni Cup. The Eagles improve to 2-1 on the season while the V-Hawks drop to 4-3.
It is UW-L's seventh straight win over Viterbo and the Eagles now lead the Alumni Cup series, 11-6.
The V-Hawks led 10-6 with 12:44 left in the first half when the Eagles went on a 11-0 run to lead 17-10. Viterbo later cut the lead to 19-17, but UW-L scored the next six points to lead 25-17 with 6:55 remaining. The Eagles finished the half on a 15-6 run to lead 44-29 at intermission.
Viterbo could get no closer than 17 points in the second half and UW-L led by as many as 30 points.
Lindsay Wahl and Mackenzie Hunter each scored 14 points to lead UW-L while Anna Halat finished with a career-high 13. Wahl was seven-of-12 from the field while Hunter finished six-of-nine, including two-of-three from three-point range. Hunter also had a game-high seven steals. Halat finished six-of-10 from the field and hit her only free throw attempt. She also registered a career-high five assists. Dana Churchill had nine points and team-high seven rebounds.
UW-L shot 52.4% from the field, including 55.6% (five-of-nine) from three-point range. The team was eight-of-eight at the free throw line.
Joni Stanek led Viterbo with 21 points, going 10-of-16 from the field, including one-of-three from three-point range. Sally Colby added 14 points and game-high nine rebounds. The V-Hawks shot 43.4% from the field, including 23.1% (three-of-13) from three-point range. Viterbo was 11-of-14 (78.6%) at the line.
UW-L returns to action Friday, November 28 hosting Iowa Wesleyan College at 7 p.m. in the Holiday Inn Express Thanksgiving Classic.
