UW-L Opens Season with Loss to Nationally-Ranked Chicago

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team opened its 2008 season with a 4-2 loss to the University of Chicago (Ill.) Saturday afternoon at Fields for Kids. Chicago is ranked 24th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas preseason poll. The Maroons now lead the all-time series, 8-1-1, with UW-L.

Chicago took a 2-0 lead at halftime after Claire Gill notched a pair of games in the first half. She scored at 15:06 with an assist from Katie Klamann and then unassisted at 17:21.

The Maroons made it 3-0 as Claire Denz scored at 59:48 with an assist from Gill and Sevana Malkasian put Chicago ahead 4-0 with a goal at 61:34. Brooke Bontz had the assist.

UW-L cut the margin to 4-1 as Sarah Harrington scored at 68:27 assisted by Ramsey Weyenberg. The Eagles' Aimee Schneider scored unassisted at 74:19 to finish the scoring.

Chicago outshot UW-L, 17-6. Emma Gormley earned the win for the Maroons, recording three saves. Sagan Pizzingrilli took the loss for the Eagles, finishing with three saves.

UW-L returns to action Friday, September 5 hosting Simpson College (Iowa) at 4 p.m. at Fields for Kids.
