Eleven Run Inning Highlights UW-L Sweep of UW-Stevens Point

La Crosse, Wis. – The UW-La Crosse softball team swept a WIAC doubleheader with UW-Stevens Point Friday afternoon at North Campus Field. The Eagles won the opener, 7-3 and the nightcap, 15-7 in five innings. UW-L, which has now won five straight and 13 of its last 15, improved to 21-7 overall and 6-2 in the WIAC. UW-Stevens Point falls to 13-9 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

In the opener, the Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on Katie Pietrowiak’s two-out two-run single scoring Natalie Stoll and Rebecca Brandt. UW-L added two more runs in the third as Cara Salm had a run-scoring double and Katie Keyes a bunt single for an RBI.

Lauren Watkins cut the lead to 4-1 for UW-Stevens Point with a solo home run in the top of the fourth, but UW-L tallied three times in the bottom half of the inning. Pietrowiak scored on a Pointers’ fielding error and Keyes added a two-run single.

UW-Stevens Point finished the scoring with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Samantha Bizeau had an RBI single in the fifth and Kimberly Liegel scored on a UW-L fielding error in the sixth.

Heather Schultz (9-4) earned the win for UW-L, going 4.2 innings, allowing six hits and two runs while striking out three. Kaylyn Von Glahn went 2.1 innings, allowing one hit, one run and one walk with two strikeouts. Keyes was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a walk while Rachel Croak was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Pietrowiak had two RBI and scored once.

Kayla Kastenmeier (10-5) took the loss for the Pointers, pitching 3.2 innings, allowing eight hits, seven runs (five earned) and three walks while striking out one. Elyse Nelson and Melissa Wenig each went 2-for-3.

In the nightcap, UW-L scored 11 times in the bottom of the fifth to earn the 15-7 win in five innings.

The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Brandt scored on a fielder error and Lena Long had an RBI single. The Pointers cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the third, but the Eagles made it 3-1 in the bottom of the inning on Keyes’ single. UW-Stevens Point tallied four times in the top of the fourth for a 5-3 lead. Allie Dorn had a two-run double for the Pointers. Rachel Weyer had an RBI triple in the bottom of the fourth to make it 5-4, but UW-Stevens Point’s Wenig hit a two-run home run in the fifth for a 7-4 lead.

UW-L then scored 11 times in the bottom of the fifth. Jenna Ahnen and Salm each had two hits in the inning with Salm having two RBI and Ahnen one. Kelsey Golackson tied the contest with an RBI double in the fifth while Pietrowiak had the go-ahead two-run single for a 9-7 lead. Keyes added an RBI on a sacrifice bunt and Stoll had a run-scoring single. Beth Schmidt finished the game with a pinch-hit RBI double.

Von Glahn (7-2) earned the win for UW-L, pitching 0.2 of an inning with one strikeout. Lacey Probst started for the Eagles, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing five hits and three runs with one strikeout while Schultz went 1.0 inning, allowing four hits, four runs and one walk.

Ahnen finished with three hits in the nightcap while Salm, Golackson, Pietrowiak and Long each had two as UW-L finished with 15 hits. Every starter had at least one hit and scored a run for the Eagles. Salm, Keyes and Pietrowiak finished with two RBI.

Nelson (1-2) suffered the loss for UW-Stevens Point, pitching to three batters in the fifth and allowing one hit and one walk. Brittany Zelenka was 2-for-3 for the Pointers while Wenig finished with two RBI.

UW-L returns to action Tuesday, April 14 at UW-Whitewater at 3 p.m.
