UW-L Sets School Record in Doubleheader Sweep at UW-Superior

Superior, Wis. - The UW-La Crosse softball team set a single-season school record for wins Monday afternoon with a pair of victories at UW-Superior. The Eagles earned a 4-3 victory in game one and 15-8 in the nightcap. UW-L is now 28-10 overall and 12-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The 28 wins breaks the school record of 27 set in 2001. UW-Superior is 10-18 overall and 1-13 in the league.

The Eagles' 12 conference wins in 2009 are also the most in single-season school history. UW-L went 11-5 in the WIAC in 2003. The conference was split into two divisions (East and West) from 1985 to 2001.

In the opener Monday, Heather Schultz pitched a complete-game victory, going 7.0 innings, allowing six hits, three runs and one walk with five strikeouts.

UW-L took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Kelsey Golackson tripled with one out and then stole home. Jenna Ahnen hit a solo home run in the top of the third for a 2-0 lead before Melissa Kunzelman cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of fourth on a ground out for UW-Superior. Cara Salm had a sacrifice bunt for an RBI and Katie Keyes an RBI single in the fifth for a 4-1 Eagles' lead. The Yellowjackets cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth on run-scoring singles from Kunzelman and Brooke Bailey, but Schultz struck out two batters and retired the side in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win.

Ahnen was 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI in the opener for UW-L while Rachel Weyer finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The teams combined for 12 runs in the third inning in the nightcap, including seven by the Eagles. Weyer, Ahnen and Lena Long each had RBI singles while Golackson knocked in a run on a fielder's choice and Katie Pietrowiak had a two-run double. UW-Superior scored five runs in the third, including run-scoring singles from Ashley Martin, Kunzelman and Jen Parchem.

Weyer scored in the top of the fourth on a Yellowjackets error to make it 8-5 and the Eagles scored three times in the top of the sixth to lead 11-5. Ahnen had a sacrifice fly for an RBI, Natalie Stoll an RBI double and Golackson a run-scoring single. UW-Superior cut the lead to 11-8 with three runs in the bottom of the sixth highlighted by Parchem's two-run double. UW-L then tallied four times in the top of the seventh to finish the scoring as Keyes hit a two-run double and Stoll a two-run home run.

Schultz earned the win in the nightcap as well, pitching 4.0 innings of relief. She allowed seven hits, three runs (two earned) and two walks while striking out six. Kaylyn Von Glahn started for the Eagles, going 3.0 innings, allowing seven hits, five runs (four earned) and one walk with three strikeouts.

Weyer set a single-game school record with five hits, finishing 5-for-5 with four runs scored and an RBI. The four runs also tied a school record. Keyes, Stoll and Long each had two hits in the second game.

UW-L returns to action Wednesday, April 29 hosting St. Mary's University (Minn.) at 4 p.m. in the final regular-season games of the year.
