Chris Helixon will begin his fifth season as the UW-La Crosse head softball coach in 2010. He led the Eagles to a record-setting season in 2009 as UW-L made its first appearance in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Tournament since 1986. 
The Eagles went 34-12 overall and 12-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) in 2009. The 34 victories set a school record, breaking the previous record of 27 set in 2001. UW-L also set single-season school records in batting average (.330), runs scored (282), hits (412), doubles (65) and runs batted in (244). The team had pitching records for saves (7) and strikeouts (240).
UW-L went 4-0 at the 2009 WIAC Tournament, earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament with a 2-0 victory over UW-Superior.
The Eagles have had nine players named to the All-WIAC First Team in Helixon's first four years.
Helixon served as head softball coach at Viterbo University (Wis.) from 1998-2002 and was named the 2001 Midwest Classic Conference Coach of the Year. He compiled a 52-84-1 record at Viterbo.
Earning a bachelor’s degree in leadership psychology from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1990, Helixon was a three-year starter in the outfield for the Black Knights. He was awarded All-Eastern Intercollegiate Baseball League Second-Team honors. Helixon earned his master’s degree in sports administration from UW-La Crosse in 1995 after a two-year graduate assistantship with the Eagles’ Athletic Department. He served as the assistant to the interim athletics director for the Eagles in 1998.
Helixon worked as an operations intern with the St. Paul Slam Professional Basketball Team in 1996-97 and as an operations/facilities intern with the University of Kentucky Athletics Association in 1995-96.
He has played on numerous fastpitch softball teams - most notably the Menomonie Blues and Colorado Springs Blues.
Helixon, his wife Tracy, and children Isaac (6), Michael (4), and Ellie (newborn) reside in Onalaska.
