UW-L Open Conference Season with Doubleheader Split

La Crosse, Wis. – The UW-La Crosse softball team opened up Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play Thursday afternoon with a doubleheader split with UW-Oshkosh at North Campus Field. The Titans won the opener, 2-0, while the Eagles took the nightcap, 2-0.

UW-L is now 16-6 overall and 1-1 in the WIAC while UW-Oshkosh is 6-8 overall and 1-1 in the league.

In the opener, Lauren Roberts (3-4) pitched a complete-game shutout as UW-L’s seven-game winning streak was snapped. The Eagles were also shutout for the first time this year. Roberts pitched 7.0 innings, allowing four hits and one walk with eight strikeouts.

The Titans, who were held to three hits in the game, took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth as Cyndi Becker scored on an Eagles’ fielding error. UW-Oshkosh’s Sydnee Wyss opened the top of the sixth with a double and later scored on Whitney Tornow’s triple.

UW-L had the bases-loaded with two outs in the bottom of the third, but failed to score.

Heather Schultz (7-3) took the loss for UW-L, going 6.0 innings, allowing three hits, two runs (one earned) and three walks while striking out five. Kaylyn Von Glahn pitched 1.0 inning with one strikeout. Katie Pietrowiak was 2-for-3 for the Eagles.

Lacey Probst

In the nightcap, Lacey Probst and Von Glahn combined on a three-hit shutout. Probst earned the victory (4-1), pitching 4.2 innings, allowing three hits while striking out two. Von Glahn earned her third save, going 2.1 innings.

UW-L scored the only runs of the second game in the bottom of the first. Katie Keyes had a bunt single to score Rachel Weyer and Jenna Ahnen scored after Keyes was thrown out trying to steal second. Five different players had one hit for the Eagles.

UW-L returns to action Saturday, April 4 at third-ranked UW-Eau Claire in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
