UW-L Sweeps Twinbill from St. Olaf; Eagles Remain Undefeated

Rosemount, Minn. – The UW-La Crosse softball team remained undefeated in the 2009 season with a doubleheader sweep of St. Olaf College (Minn.) Thursday afternoon in Rosemount. The Eagles won the opener, 10-0 in five innings, and the nightcap, 12-1 in six innings.
UW-L improves to 6-0 on the season while St. Olaf fell to 0-2. The Eagles are off to their best start since going 7-0 to begin the 1987 season.
In game one, Heather Schultz pitched a complete-game for UW-L, allowing six hits while striking out 10 in 5.0 innings.
The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Rachel Weyer scored on a Cara Salm groundout and Kim Pietrowiak had a run-scoring single to knock in Rachel Croak. UW-L added two more runs in the second inning as Katie Pietrowiak hit a solo home run Jenna Ahnen had an RBI groundout. In the bottom of the third, Kim Pietrowiak opened the inning with a triple and scored on Natalie Stoll's groundout.
UW-L finished the scoring with five runs in the fourth inning. Jenna Ahnen had an RBI double while Salm and Stoll each had run-scoring singles. Katie Pietrowiak added a sacrifice fly to score a run and Lena Long an RBI groundout.
Kim Pietrowiak finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI in the opener while Katie Pietrowiak went 2-for-2 and Stoll finished 2-for-3. Pietrowiak and Stoll each had two RBI and a run scored.
In the nightcap, Kaylyn Von Glahn earned the win for the Eagles, going 4.0 innings, allowing three hits, one run (unearned) and four walks with two strikeouts. Lacey Probst pitched 2.0 innings with four strikeouts.
UW-L took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Weyer opened the game with a home run. The Eagles tallied four times in the fourth inning. Kelsey Golackson had an RBI double and Sara Monahan a run-scoring single while Croak had a two-run single.
St. Olaf scored once in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 5-1, but UW-L scored a run in the fifth inning and six more in the sixth. Stoll hit a solo home run to account for the run in the fifth and added a three-run double in the sixth. Croak had a run-scoring fielder's choice in the sixth inning while Salm drew a bases-loaded walk and Weyer had an RBI single.
Stoll finished 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored in the second game of the doubleheader while Croak had three RBI. Weyer was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Kim Pietrowiak was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
UW-L returns to action Saturday, March 14 against the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) at 9:30 p.m. in Rosemount, Minnesota.
