For Immediate Release: Saturday, March 14, 2009
Terre Haute, Ind. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women’s track and field team finished second Saturday at the 2009 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. The Eagles recorded 41.5 team points while Wartburg College (Iowa) captured the national title with 51.0 points. UW-Oshkosh placed third (33.0) followed by Illinois Wesleyan University (28.0) and Tufts University (23.0) to round-out the top-five. A total of 68 teams scored points.
It is UW-L’s fourth second-place finish in NCAA III history (1993, 1999, 2001, 2009). The Eagles, who tied for fourth last season, have recorded seven top-three finishes in school history.
UW-L’s Caitlin Schetter, who captured her second consecutive indoor national title in the long jump Friday (18-10), placed second in the triple jump Saturday (39-5). It is her sixth career indoor All-America award, including second in the triple jump. She was fifth in the triple jump in 2007.
Schetter also earned her first career indoor All-America honor on the track Saturday, finishing seventh in the 55-meter dash (7.17).
For her efforts, Schetter was named the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Women's Field Athlete of the Meet.
She has three career indoor long jump All-America recognitions, including the back-to-back national championships in 2008 and 2009, and a seventh-place finish in 2007. She became the second athlete in NCAA Division III history to win back-to-back national indoor long jump titles, joining Tara (Harding) Jaeger from UW-Oshkosh in 1995 and 1996. Schetter, Jaeger and Sandy Shelton (Christopher Newport University, Va.) are the only multiple-winners in the long jump. Shelton won in 1988 and 1991.
The Eagles’ Christy Bohl placed fifth in the shot put Saturday (45-1 3/4) to pick up her first career All-America award.
UW-L’s 4x400-meter relay also earned All-America honors Saturday. The relay of Kelsey Katarow, Caitlin Wippermann, Lauren Seidl and Danica Schaefer finished eighth (3:55.50). Schaefer earned her third career indoor All-America award while Katarow, Wippermann and Seidl picked up their first. Schaefer has earned all three of her honors in the 4x400-meter relay. The Eagles were fifth in 2007 and fourth in 2008 along with this year’s eighth-place finish.
