UW-L Places Third at NCAA III Outdoor Championships; Fondow Finishes Second in Triple Jump

Marietta, Ohio – The UW-La Crosse women's track & field team finished third at the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships at Don Drumm Stadium Saturday afternoon at Marietta College. The Eagles totaled 48.0 team points while Wartburg College (Iowa) won the national crown with 52.0 points and UW-Oshkosh placed second with 50.0.
UW-Eau Claire was fourth (34.5), followed by Washington University, Mo. (28.0), Gustavus Adolphus College, Minn. (27.0), Illinois Wesleyan University (24.0), Hardin-Simmons University, Texas (22.0) and Frostburg State University, Md. (21.5) in the top-nine. St. Norbert College (Wis.), The College of New Jersey and Massaschusetts Institute of Technology tied for 10th with 20.0 points.
It marks the third time UW-L has placed third at the national outdoor championships under head coach Pat Healy (1995, 2003, 2009). The Eagles have had 11 top-six finishes at the NCAA III Outdoor Championships under Healy, including second-place finishes in 1993 and 1997.
The Eagles' Katie Fondow and Caitlin Schetter both earned NCAA Division III All-America honors in the triple jump Saturday. Fondow placed second overall (39-8) while Schetter was sixth (39-2 1/4).
UW-L's 4x100-meter relay of Kailey Charlton, Ashton May, Fondow and Schetter also earned All-America accolades Saturday with a fifth-place finish (47.32).
Fondow ends her career with her five career outdoor All-America awards. Along with the second-place finish and as a member of the Eagles' 4x100-meter relay Saturday, Fondow was second in this year's long jump. She placed fourth in the long jump and seventh in the triple jump in 2007. Fondow also earned four career indoor All-America honors.
With her accolades Saturday in the triple jump and 4x100-meter relay, Schetter finishes her career with 13 All-America honors. She captured the national long jump title Thursday, setting an NCAA Division III season-best and stadium record mark of 19-10 1/4. Schetter has seven career outdoor recognitions and six indoors, including winning long jump crowns in 2008 and 2009.
Charlton earned her first career All-America honor with the fifth-place 4x100-meter relay while May picked up her fourth accolade. She placed fourth in the long jump at this year's meet and was a member of UW-L's fifth-place 4x100-meter relay at the 2007 NCAA III Outdoor Championships and sixth-place 4x100-meter relay in 2008.
In other action Saturday, UW-L's Christy Bohl finished 15th in the shot put (41-7 3/4).
