UW-L Wins Wartburg Select to Open Outdoor Season; Scott Captures Heptathlon

Waverly, Iowa – The UW-La Crosse women's track & field team opened its 2009 outdoor season by capturing the Wartburg College Select Meet Saturday afternoon in Waverly. The Eagles finished with 195.5 points while Wartburg College was second with 193.0. The University of St. Thomas, Minn. placed third (134.0) followed by Loras College, Iowa (91.0), Simpson College, Iowa (86.0) and UW-Platteville (57.5.).
Five student-athletes captured individual titles Saturday for UW-L. Jamie Scott won the heptathlon with an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying total of 4,115 points. The Eagles' Caitlin Schetter captured the 100-meter dash (12.33) while Stephanie Perleberg won the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:01.02). Perleberg also provisionally qualified for the national championships.
In field events, Christy Bohl won the discus throw (130-10) and Kaitlin Genthe the pole vault (11-9 3/4). Genthe provisional qualified for the national meet with her winning performance in the pole vault. Along with winning the discus, Bohl was second in the shot put (42-6 1/4) and third in the hammer (141-0) and javelin (107-5) throws. She met provisional qualifying status with her second-place finish in the shot.
Other top finishers on the track for the Eagles included: Ashton May second (12.82) and Katie Fondow (13.02) in the 100-meter dash while Schetter was second in the 200-meter dash (25.22 - provisional time). Danica Schaefer was fourth in the 200-meter dash (25.63) and Caitlin Wippermann fifth in the 400-meter dash (1:01.53). Alison Kolinski was fifth in the 5,000-meter run (18:31.58) while Megan Johnson was second (11:48.25) and Mary Olson third (11:54.14) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
UW-L placed third in the 4x100-meter relay (49.57) and fifth in the 4x400-meter relay (4:07.10).
In field events, Abby Schulz was second in the triple jump (34-8 1/2) and fourth in the long jump (16-2 1/2). Kaitlyn Joyce was second (10-10) and Christy Moses fourth (10-0) in the pole vault while Sara Mitchell was fourth (4-11) and Jenna Hudziak fifth (4-9) in the high jump.
Leanne Nowicki finished fifth in the heptatlon (3,393 points).
