UW-L Leads After First Day of WIAC Championships; Schetter and Bohl Win Titles

Menomonie, Wis. - The UW-La Crosse women's track & field team leads after the first day of competition at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Indoor Championships at UW-Stout's Sports & Fitness Center. The Eagles have 79.5 team points. UW-Eau Claire is second with 54.5 points and UW-Oshkosh third with 34.5. UW-Stout is fourth (23.0) followed by UW-River Falls (18.0), UW-Platteville (10.0), UW-Whitewater (9.5), UW-Stevens Point (5.0) and UW-Superior (0.0).

UW-L's Caitlin Schetter and Christy Bohl both captured individual titles Saturday. Schetter set a WIAC record in winning the long jump with a mark of 19-5 1/2. She broke the previous record (19-1 1/4) set by Margie Tremeear of UW-Milwaukee in 1983. Schetter's mark also automatically qualified her for the NCAA Division III Championshps. Bohl won the shot put with an automatic qualifying mark of 46-8 3/4.

The Eagles had the top-three finishers in the long jump. Along with Schetter's conference title, Katie Fondow was second (19-1 1/2) and Ashton May third (18-8). Fondow earned the NCAA III automatic qualifying standard while May earned the provisional standard.

UW-L had four of the top-eight places in the pole vault Saturday. Katlin Genthe finished second (12-4 1/2), Jamie Scott tied for third (12-0 1/2), Alecia Ellingstad finished sixth (11-6 1/2) and Kaitlin Joyce was eighth (11-0 3/4). Genthe automatically qualified for the national meet while Scott and Ellingstad both provisionally qualified.

Jenna Hudziak finished second in the high jump (5-1 3/4) for the Eagles while Sara Mitchell was third (5-1 3/4) and Amy Jo Garinger seventh (4-11 3/4).

On the track, the Eagles' distance medley relay provisionally qualified for the NCAA III Championships. The relay of Michelle Horn, Kayla Raduka, Beth Richmond and Megan Johnson placed third with a time of 12:18.91. The Eagles' Whitney Nefstead placed fifth (18:40.81) and Kayla La Porte was seventh (18:50.39) in the 5,000-meter run.

In preliminary track action Saturday, Ellingstad (8.51) and Maggie May (8.60) qualified for Sunday's final in the 55-meter hurdles. Schetter (7.32), Ashton May (7.40), Kailey Charlton (7.45) and Laurel Beck (7.45) all advanced in the 55-meter dash.

UW-L had five athletes advance to the 200-meter dash final in Schetter (25.97), Kelsey Katarow (26.10), Lauren Seidl (26.22), Beck (26.27) and Danica Schaefer (26.29). Schaefer (59.30) and Katarow (58.74) also advanced in the 400-meter dash.

Kriston Siemianowski (2:21.28) and Kelsey Heinz (2:21.29) advanced to the 800-meter run championship.
