La Crosse, Wis. – University of Wisconsin-La Crosse junior Caitlin Schetter of Kiel (H.S.) has been named to the 2008 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American College Division Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country Second Team.
The Academic All-American Team is comprised of all NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA student-athletes and is voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A communication studies major at UW-L with a 3.68 grade point average, Schetter was selected the 2008 United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Indoor Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Year. She was also named the USTFCCCA Midwest Region Women's Indoor and Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year.
She captured the long jump at the 2008 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships with a mark of 19-2 3/4. Schetter became the third different individual (fourth national championship overall) in school history to win a NCAA Division III indoor national title and the first to take the long jump. Schetter was the first athlete since Patti Franckowiak in 1999 (weight throw) to win a national title. Franckowiak also won the weight throw in 1998 while Jessie Coonen won the shot put championship in 1993.
It was Schetter's third career indoor All-America accolade, also finishing fifth in the triple jump and seventh in the long jump in 2007.
Named the 2008 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Indoor Field Performer of the Meet, Schetter won the triple jump and finished second in the long jump at the indoor championships.
Schetter earned three All-America honors at this year's outdoor national championships, including a second-place finish in the long jump and eighth in the triple jump. She was also on the Eagles' sixth-place 4x100-meter relay. Schetter was fifth in the long jump in 2007.
She set a school and Veterans Memorial Stadium record in the long jump at the NCAA III Qualifier May 15 with a mark of 19-6 1/4.
At the 2008 WIAC Outdoor Championships, Schetter won the long jump and was on UW-L's winning 4x100-meter relay. She also placed second in the triple jump and fourth in the 200-meter dash.
