UW-La Crosse Opens Season with Pair of Wins

La Crosse, Wis. – For the eighth consecutive year, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team opened its season with a 2-0 record as it won a pair of matches at the UW-L Invitational Friday in Mitchell Hall.

The Eagles, ranked 20th in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Preseason Top-25 Poll, earned a 3-0 (25-8, 25-7, 25-20) victory over Fontbonne College (Mo.) in their first match. Elizabeth Carlisle led UW-L with nine kills. She had one hitting error in 16 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage. Amber Schoonover added seven kills and Kate Malterer five. UW-L hit .289 as a team.

Emily Carroll and Kasey Corcoran each had 13 assists while Schoonover had 12 digs.

UW-L then defeated eighth-ranked the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) by the score of 3-1 (25-21, 20-25, 25-20, 25-21). Nina Walch had 16 kills and Schoonover 11. Walch had one error in 16 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage. Carroll finished with 40 assists.

Carlisle led five players in double-digit digs with 19 while Schoonover had 16 and Carroll 15. Melannie Tate finished with 13 digs and Brianne Stankus 11.

UW-L hit .215 as a team, including .308 in the fourth set (17 kills, one error, 52 attempts).

The Eagles return to action Saturday, August 30 hosting Maryville University (Mo.) at 10:30 a.m. and Fontbonne at 2:30 p.m.
