UW-L Falls at UW-Superior to Open WIAC Play

Superior, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team opened its 2009 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) season with a 3-1 (25-21, 14-25, 18-25, 20-25) loss at UW-Superior Friday night.

The Eagles fall to 2-8 overall and 0-1 in the league while the Yellowjackets improve to 7-5 overall and 1-0 in the WIAC.

Brianne Stankus and Kate Malterer led UW-L with 12 kills each against UW-Superior while Amanda Hardy totaled eight. Liz Schlobohm had 32 assists for the Eagles. UW-L hit .274 as a team.

Melannie Tate led the squad with 17 digs.

Chelsie Christoffers led UW-Superior with 21 kills while hitting .356. Kayla Finck finished with 32 assists and Sarah Gruber had 14. The Yellowjackets hit .268 as a team.

Samantha Blake had a team-high 15 digs while Rachel Langer finished with six blocks. UW-Superior had 11.0 blocks in the match.

UW-L returns to action Saturday, Sept. 19 at 13th-ranked UW-Eau Claire starting at noon.
