Principles for Responsible Management Education |
Global corporate responsibility and sustainability were the focus of the first Global Forum for Responsible Management Education at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City Dec. 4 and 5. UW-L Management Professor John Betton was one of approximately 400 who attended from around the world.
In October, Chancellor Joe Gow signed the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) initiative formalizing UW-L's commitment to global responsibility and sustainability, concepts being incorporated into UW-L's management curriculum and under consideration for adopting them by the College of Business Administration. The management department is a partner in the United Nations Global Compact.
Traditionally, business curriculums focused more on the functional areas of business, such as accounting, finance and marketing. Business leaders at the global forum stressed the importance of students being curious about what's happening worldwide, Betton notes. "They expect business graduates to be familiar with global responsibility issues and sustainability and how they impact business."
A detailed report on the Global Forum will be published on the PRME Web site (www.unprme.org/global-forum/index.php) in January 2009.
To learn more about the forum, global responsibility and sustainability issues, contact Betton at betton.john@uwlax.edu.

Students seek donations, school supplies for Tanzanian children
Sixteen UW-L students are traveling to Tanzania during J-Term to study social responsibility and ethical globalization and participate in service learning projects. They are conducting a donation drive for school supplies — pencils, crayons, notebooks — toothbrushes, dental floss and sports gear for the Tanzanian children they will meet. They also seek monetary donations to purchase textbooks and malaria nets for the schoolchildren. A donation of $10, $25 or $50 would help reach the goal of $500.
Write checks to the UW-L Foundation with "Tanzania Books 2009" in the memo line. Drop off donations with Donna Anderson, economics, in 339D Wimberly Hall, or with Sheri Ross, philosophy, in 245D Wimberly Hall. Or contact any of the students going on the trip. The students include: Heather Burgus, Mariah Conway, Tricia Gantz, Shaheen Gutierrez, Kelli Irish, Krystle Koelker, Kathryn Magnuson, Sheila Oberreuter, Lindsey Polzin, Matt Quade, Stephanie Rohr, Katie Jo Scholl, Kathryn Schumacher, Richard Swatek, John Temple and Leah Walker.
Still time to form Relay for Life team
The sixth annual Relay for Life, "Marga Relei Ville," is Friday and Saturday, Feb. 6 and 7, 2009, in the Recreational Eagle Center. Last year's 92 teams included 1,000 participants and raised $78,708.04 for cancer research. Although the T-shirt deadline was Friday, Dec. 5, you can register a team until Tuesday, Feb.3 , at www.relayforlife.org/laxcolleges.
The next team captain meeting is at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, in 339 Cartwright Center. T-shirts will be distributed. Bank night is at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, in Port O’ Call, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition.
The teams spend the night relaying and enjoying entertainment. The night is filled with live music, exercise classes, a dodgeball tournament, a ping pong tournament and a silent auction. There are also several theme laps in which teams dress up including: dude looks like a lady, under the sea, out of towner, Gilligan’s Island, aloha lap, and school spirit.
Participants who raise over $100 become VIPs, are entered for exclusive drawings, and have access to food, drinks and extra perks all night. The more money participants raise the greater the chance to win prizes. Each time a participant reaches the next VIP level — $100, $500, $1000 — chances to get a price increase.

NCUR update
NCUR 2009 campus planning committees are finalizing plans to make room for nearly 3,000 students and faculty advisers who are expected to visit the campus Thursday through Saturday, April 16-18, 2009. To accommodate conference speakers and research participants, planners need to use UW-L classrooms Thursday and Friday during the event.
The conference is an opportunity for the UW-L undergraduate community to participate in world-class research and creative activities. If you are among faculty and staff members whose classrooms are affected by the conference, consider incorporating conference activities into your syllabus. To compensate for missed classroom time, students may attend:
- Keynote addresses
- The Graduate School Fair
- Poster and oral sessions
- Performing and visual arts sessions
If you choose to use any of these events as a classroom assignment, conference planners have created potential assignments for your students. The assignments and classrooms affected will be sent as attachments via e-mail from the Provost’s office.
UW-L students, faculty and staff may attend any NCUR conference events that do not require a conference badge.

Many thanks to all the members of the UW-L community who have shared my professional life here since l987. As Tennyson wrote, "I am a part of all that I have met;/Yet all experience is an arch wherethro'/Gleams that untravell'd world, whose margin fades/For ever and for ever when I move." I leave UW-L with immense joy for the privilege of having worked with so many students and faculty during my teaching years. It has been an unforgettable journey. - Mary Davidson, English
