TAKING A COURSE ELSEWHERE FOR TRANSFER BACK TO UW-L
NOTE: In compliance with established university policy, failing grades and deficiencies in grade point averages at UW-L may be removed only by taking work in residence at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Courses may not be repeated at another institution and transferred to this university.
A. IF YOU WANT TO TAKE A COURSE AT A UW SYSTEM SCHOOL FOR TRANSFER BACK TO UW-L
Step 1: The UW System maintains a Transfer Information System (TIS) Web site. This site, at www.uwsa.edu/tis, will provide information about credit transfer, academic program requirements and more. TIS is designed to give prospective transfer students current information about transferring, including how UW System and Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) courses you are currently taking will transfer to any institution in the UW System, and which courses to take at your current school to fulfill specific requirements at your intended transfer campus.
Scenario: Suppose you're already attending UW-La Crosse and know that you need to take CHM 103. You'll be home for the summer and want to take a course at your local UW (UW-Eau Claire) that will transfer back to UW-La Crosse as CHM 103. This is the perfect situation for the Reverse Look-up Wizard.
Step 2: If you find a course you would like to take, you will need to see if the course is offered during the semester in which you would like to enroll. UW HELP On-line maintains links to UW Campus “Schedule of Classes” information .
WARNING!!!! Now that you have found the course you want to take elsewhere and transfer back to UW-L, you must secure approval from your College in advance of enrollment.
Step 3: Go to the office of the College in which you are enrolled and fill out an “Off-Campus Permit” form. This form is used to secure approval to transfer credits from other institutions. Take the information you have gathered from TIS and see your appropriate College office.

B. IF YOU WANT TO TAKE A COURSE AT A PRIVATE WISCONSIN SCHOOL OR ANY OUT-OF-STATE SCHOOL
TIS does not have transfer information for private colleges and universities in Wisconsin or any out of state college or universities. If you want to take a course at a private school in Wisconsin or any school out of state, it’s still possible but requires a little more work on your part.
Step 1: Assistants to the Deans and AAC advisors have access to a data base that tells us which courses have already been approved for transfer from private schools and out of state schools. We can access that data base and tell you the comparable course number for any course here at UW-L IF it is in the data base. But just like TIS, you still must get the course approved by your College.
If there is no previous course approval on the data base you must do some homework yourself. Access the school’s catalog on line if available. Look for a course description similar to the course here at UW-L.
Step 2: Copy the course description from the institution’s catalog and see your College Assistant to the Dean. Again, be sure to check for a schedule of classes on-line so that you are assured the class will be offered in the semester you expect to enroll. Depending on the campus, this information may be titled “Schedule of Classes” or “Timetable”.
C. Getting admitted to the institution
If the course is approved by your College you will need to get admitted to this institution as a “special non-degree student”.

If the course is not a UW institution, go to the Admissions page of the institution and look for “special student application” or “non-degree student application”. These are typically the terms used for students taking courses at a school but not intending to earn a degree.
D. UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-EXTENSION INDEPENDENT LEARNING COURSES
Independent Learning courses are delivered by various options: print-based only, print-based with e-mail option, telecourse, or on-line. Students submit their course work by mail, e-mail, or fax. Independent Learning undergraduate-level credits may be transferable to UW-L. Check transferability in TIS. In the Credit Transfer Wizard, look for UW-Extension INDP Learn. As with any transfer course, you must get the course approved by your College. See the Assistant to the Dean for your College before considering this option.
E. AFTER COMPLETING A COURSE AT ANOTHER INSTITUTION
After completing a class at another institution, you must request an official transcript be sent back to UW-L. There is usually a cost involved. UW-L will not accept transcripts marked “Issued to Student” or hand carried and not mailed directly from the issuing institution(s) for evaluating and awarding credit.
When credits are transferred and accepted, they are recorded in terms of UW-L courses. The student’s record shows courses, grades, and credits, however, only credits are used. Grades and/or grade points are not generally transferred. Exceptions to this policy are necessary for admission into certain programs/majors. The cumulative grade point average of each UW-L student is determined only by credits and grades earned in residence at the university.
A course in which a grade of “D” was earned and accepted by this university may be applied to General Education and/or core requirements but will be subject to re-evaluation at a later date if the student chooses to major or minor in the subject area, or discipline in which “D” grades were earned.
FYI - Credits also may be transferred from examination programs such as the Advanced Placement Program (AP), the College Level Entrance Program (CLEP), or the International Baccalaureate (IB) program.
