Mural unveiling coincides with first annual arts event downtown

Alyssa Shurbert-Hetzel and Shelby Phillips each received an Undergraduate Research Grant to serve as apprentices to internationally-known mural artist John Pugh. Pugh is creating La Crosse's first trompe l'oeil (meaning "to deceive the eye") mural, funded in part through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). The NEA grant made it possible for Alyssa and Shelby to travel twice to Pugh's California studio, where they began their work with him in January. Having recently returned from a Spring Break visit for further work on the mural, Shelby and Alyssa are creating a mural of their own in the Student Gallery (Center for the Arts Room 340). Like John Pugh's murals, theirs is designed to be worked on in the studio, then coated with varnish and adhesive when the completed work is installed in its designated location. Serving as faculty sponsor to Alyssa and Shelby is Jennifer Williams Terpstra.
