UW-L Earns Doubleheader Sweep at UW-Superior

Superior, Wis. – The UW-La Crosse baseball team earned a WIAC doubleheader sweep at UW-Superior Sunday afternoon at Ted Whereatt Field. The Eagles won the opener, 5-2, and the nightcap, 8-3. UW-L improves to 17-18 overall and 10-12 in the WIAC while UW-Superior falls to 15-21 overall and 4-18 in the conference.

In the opener, Tony Peterson knocked in Mike Schmidt on a fielder's choice to give UW-L a 1-0 lead. The Eagles made it 3-0 in the fifth as Dusty Otto had a sacrifice fly and Schmidt an RBI single.

UW-Superior cut the margin to 3-2 with runs in the sixth and seventh. Andrew Berenguer scored on a wild pitch in the sixth and then had a run-scoring single in the seventh. The Eagles added two runs in the top of the eighth on Peterson's double scoring Erick Muhlenbeck and Darren O'Donnell.

Ross Benitz (5-5) picked up the win for UW-L, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing nine hits, two runs and three walks with six strikeouts. Tim Larson pitched 1.1 innings, allowing three walks while striking out two. Mike Brehm earned his third save, pitching 0.2 of an inning, getting Berenguer to groundout into a game-ending double play with the bases loaded.

Peterson was 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI while Schmidt finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Tim Bouvine (3-5) suffered the loss for UW-Superior, going 8.0 innings, allowing eight hits, five runs (four earned) and three walks with three strikeouts. Berenguer was 2-for-5 with a run scored and RBI while Joey Hostrawser was 2-for-4.

In the nightcap, each team tallied a run in the first inning. Otto and Storm Gram hit back-to-back doubles for UW-L's run in the top half of the frame while Sean Cummings had an RBI single for UW-Superior. The Eagles took a 3-1 lead with a pair of runs in the second on Tyler Peterson's two-run single scoring Tony Peterson and Travis Kerr.

UW-L added a run in each of the fourth, fifth and seventh innings to lead 6-1. Tyler Peterson had an RBI single in the fourth, Gram scored on a passed ball in the fifth and Schmidt had a run-scoring single in the seventh. UW-Superior scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to 6-3, but UW-L finished the scoring in the ninth on Schmidt's RBI single and O'Donnell's sacrifice fly.

Luke Zurbriggen (2-1) earned the win, going 7.0 innings, allowing six hits, three runs (two earned) and two walks while striking out four. Larson pitched 1.0 inning, giving up two walks with one strikeout while Brehm pitched 1.0 inning, allowing one walk with two strikeouts.

Tyler Peterson was 4-for-4 with three RBI while Gram was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Schmidt finished 2-for-5 with two RBI while Otto was 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Tony Peterson also scored twice for the Eagles.

Justin Saufley (4-3) took the loss, pitching 8.0 innings, allowing 11 hits, six runs (three earned) and two walks while striking out three. Six different players had a hit for the Yellowjackets.

UW-L and UW-Superior will play another doubleheader Monday, May 5 beginning at noon.
