UW-L Drops Wells Fargo Copeland Cup to Viterbo

La Crosse, Wis. – The UW-La Crosse baseball team fell 14-4 to city-rival Viterbo University Tuesday night at Copeland Park in the Wells Fargo Copeland Cup. The Eagles fall to 15-18 on the season while the V-Hawks improve to 26-14.

UW-L took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on Darren O'Donnell's two-run single scoring Storm Gram and Matt Trocke. The Eagles made it 4-0 in the second as Gram had an RBI single knocking in Johnny Strnad and Mike Schmidt a sacrifice fly to score Lance Poppy.

UW-L would not score the rest of the game as Viterbo cut the lead to 4-1 in the second and made it 5-4 in the fourth scoring four runs. The V-Hawks tallied six times in the fifth, highlighted by Shawn Loch's grand slam.

Viterbo added a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to earn the win.

Gavin Scray (0-2) took the loss for UW-L, pitching 0.1 of an inning, allowing one hit, four runs and four walks. Tim Larson started for the Eagles, going 2.0 innings, allowing two hits, one run and one walk while striking out two. UW-L used six pitchers in the contest.

Trocke, Gram and O'Donnell each had two hits for the Eagles.

Levi Adank picked up the win for Viterbo, going 7.0 innings in relief, allowing three hits with nine strikeouts. Drew Roberts was 3-for-3 at the plate for the V-Hawks with htree runs scored and an RBI. Justin Daniels was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI while Loch and Kyle Dreger had two hits.

UW-L returns to action Friday, May 2 at UW-Superior in a doubleheader at noon.
