UW-L Competes at ITA Midwest Regional and Midwest Open

St. Peter, Minn. - The UW-La Crosse men’s tennis team competed at the ITA Midwest Regional and Midwest Open this weekend at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter. No team scores were recorded.

In singles play at the ITA Regional, UW-L's Nick Piotrowski and Paul Vickers advanced to the third round. Piotrowski went 2-1 for the tournament, defeating Eric Ritter of Grinnell in the first round by scores of 6-7 (3), 6-2, 1-0 (11-9) and 16th-seeded Kevin Fawcett of UW-Eau Claire in the second round by the scores of 6-4, 6-3. Piotrowski then retired in a third round match with 19th-seeded Peter Dunn of Carleton by scores of 6-3, 3-3.

Vickers had a first round bye for earning a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7) victory over Peter Wright of Gustavus Adolphus in the second round. Fourteen-seeded Nate Fox of Grinnell then defeated Vickers in the third round, 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (12-10).

UW-L's Nathan Fekete and Doug Marmar went 1-1 in singles play while Joey Van Lieshout finished 0-1. Marmar then went 2-1 in the ITA Consolation Tournament, advancing to the third round. He finished 3-2 overall.

In the doubles competition in the ITA Midwest Regional, Fekete/Van Lieshout went 0-1.

In the Midwest Open singles competition, Sam Talarczyk advanced to the fourth round. After receiving a first round bye, he defeated David Reckase of St. Mary's in the second round (6-2, 6-4) and Prateek Haralalka of Coe in the third round (6-3, 6-0). Talarczyk then fell to Aaron Johnson of UW-Eau Claire in the fourth round (6-1, 6-1).

Alex Kaker won his first two matches in singles play in the Midwest Open, defeating Austin Merrill of Loras (6-1, 6-2) and Giovani Becker of Concordia (6-1, 6-1). He then lost in the third round ot Ian Hanson of St. John's (6-1, 6-3).

Brian Kapphahn went 1-1 in singles play for the Eagles while Kyual Cribben, Brandon Stenseth and Jon Mahvi each finished 0-1. Stenseth also lost in the ITA Consolation Tournament to go 0-2 overall.

During Midwest Open doubles play, Mahvi/Vickers and Kaker/Steven Quiring both went 1-1 while Cribben/Kapphahan, Marmar/Stenseth and Piotrowski/Talarczyk all lost their only match of the tournament.

In the ITA Consolation Tournament, Fekete/Piotrowski advanced to the championship match, falling to Kirby Johnson/Jordan Swanson of Concordia College in the final (8-5). Fekete/Piotrowski had defeated teammates Mahvi/Vickers in the consolation semifinals (8-4). Fekete/Piotrowski went 3-1 overall in doubles while Mahvi/Vickers were 2-2. Cribben/Kapphahn went 0-2 overall after losing in the first round of the consolation round.
