UW-L Falls at Carroll College

Waukesha, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team fell 61-55 at Carroll College Saturday afternoon in the championship game of the Kilgour Tournament. The Eagles drop to 1-1 on the season while the Lady Pioneers improve to 2-0. UW-L had advanced to the championship game with a 42-26 victory over Southwestern Texas University Friday night.

The contest was tied nine times in the first half, the last coming at 23-23 with 1:59 remaining. Carroll then finished the half on a 6-1 run to lead 29-24.

UW-L took a 30-29 lead with 16:57 remaining in the game and led 35-34 with 12:50 left. Amy Fleming hit a three-pointer to give Carroll a 37-35 lead with 12:33 remaining and the Lady Pioneers never trailed the rest of the contest. Carroll led 40-35 before UW-L cut the deficit to 43-41 with 9:39 left. The Eagles could get no closer than 49-47 on an Ashley Wagner lay-up with 5:25 left. The Lady Pioneers went on a 7-2 run to lead 56-49 with 1:44 remaining.

Mackenzie Hunter led UW-L with 22 points, finishing 10-of-20 from the field, including two-of-six from three-point range. She missed her only free throw attempt. Melissa Lang scored eight points for the Eagles while Mandy Stevens, Sam Aspenson and Wagner each finished with five. Wagner added five assists and four rebounds while Aspenson had six rebounds. Lindsay Wahl had a game-high nine rebounds.

The Eagles shot 51.1% (24-of-47) from the field, including 33.3% (two-of-six) from three-point range. UW-L hit five-of-12 (41.7%) free throw attempts.

Crystal Hoewisch led Carroll with 28 points. She was 11-of-13 at the free throw line. Fleming added 11 points. The Lady Pioneers shot 41.7% (20-of-48) from the field, including 18.2% (two-of-11) from three-point range. Carroll finished 19-of-26 (73.1%) at the line.

UW-L outrebounded Carroll, 33-24, but had 17 turnovers to the Lady Pioneers' 10.

UW-L returns to action Tuesday, November 20 at city-rival Viterbo University beginning at 6 p.m.
