UW-L Wins Sixth Straight over Viterbo

La Crosse, Wis. – The UW-La Crosse women’s basketball team used a 15-4 run in the second half to earn a 62-53 victory at city-rival Viterbo University Tuesday night in R.W. Beggs Senior Gymnasium. The Eagles improved to 2-1 with the win while the V-Hawks fell to 1-6.
UW-L has now won six straight over Viterbo in the Wells Fargo Alumni Cup and lead the all-time series, 10-6.
The contest was tied seven times in the first half with Viterbo taking its largest lead of five points, including 29-24 with 1:08 remaining. UW-L cut the deficit to 29-26 at halftime.
Viterbo led 42-41 with 10:42 left in the game when UW-L went on its 15-4 run to lead 56-46 with 4:24 remaining. Amanda Waldvogel had five points for the Eagles in their run and the V-Hawks would get no closer than three the rest of the game. The Eagles were nine-of-12 at the free throw line (75.0%) in the second half.
Mackenzie Hunter led UW-L with 19 points, including 13 in the second half. She was eight-of-13 from the field (one-of-two from three-point range) and two-of-two at the line. Melissa Lang added a career-high 11 points for the Eagles, finishing four-of-six from the field and three-of-four at the free throw line. Ashley Wagner, Mandy Stevens, Sam Aspenson, Waldvogel and Anna Halat each scored six points. Aspenson had a game-high nine rebounds.
UW-L shot 50.0% (24-of-48) from the field, including 33.3% (one-of-three) from three-point range. The Eagles were 13-of-17 (76.5%) at the line. The Eagles outrebounded the V-Hawks, 36-35, while finishing with 22 turnovers. Viterbo totaled 19 turnovers.
Kari Thiel led Viterbo with 18 points, finishing four-of-10 from the field, including three-of-seven from three-point range. She was seven-of-eight at the line and recorded a game-high seven steals. Katina Mandylaris added 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds for the V-Hawks. Katie Mechling and Raelyn Hayes each scored eight points for Viterbo while Joni Stanek finished with six.
Viterbo shot 32.8% (19-of-58) from the field, including 18.2% (four-of-22) from three-point range. The V-Hawks were 11-of-17 (64.7%) at the free throw line.
UW-L returns to action Saturday, November 24 hosting the Holiday Inn Express Thanksgiving Classic. The Eagles open play in the classic versus NCAA Division II Winona State University at 5 p.m.
