UW-L Falls Twice to Winona State; Weyer Sets School Record

La Crosse, Wis. – The UW-La Crosse softball team wrapped up its regular-season schedule with a doubleheader loss to NCAA Division II Winona State University (Minn.) Wednesday afternoon at North Campus Field. The Warriors won the opener, 8-0 in five innings, and the nightcap, 5-3.

UW-L falls to 22-17 on the season while Winona State improves to 31-13.

In the opener, Chelsey Ewing picked up the win, going 5.0 innings, allowing two hits while striking out two. Winona State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on Jenny Wilmes' sacrifice fly to score Mollie Bjelland. The Warriors added five runs in the third, four being unearned as the Eagles committed two errors. Chelsea Rosenow had an RBI single in the third while Annie Stuedemann hit a solo home run.

Winona State added two more runs in the fifth on Stuedemann's two-run double. Stuedemann was 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and three RBI while Rosenow was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.

Heather Schultz (7-7) was the losing pitcher, going 2.2 innings, allowing five hits, six runs (two earned) and one walk. Rachel Croak and Liz Bradley each had one hit for UW-L.

In the nightcap, the Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on Rachel Weyer's double scoring Lena Long and Kelsey Golackson. The double was Weyer's 59th hit of the year, a single-season school record. She later added a run-scoring double in the sixth. Weyer broke the school record of 58 hits held by Rochell Vandenlangenberg set in 1994.

Winona State cut the lead to 2-1 in the third on Rosenow's RBI single and took a 3-2 lead in the fifth. Bjelland had a sacrifice fly and Rosenow scored the game-leading run on a wild pitch. The Warriors scored two runs in the sixth before Weyer's double in the bottom of the inning made it 5-3.

Kristen Fossell picked up the win for Winona State, going 5.0 innings, allowing five hits, one run and two walks with five strikeouts. Rosenow, Wilmes and Callie Givens each had two hits.

Jess Iwanski (4-1) suffered the loss for UW-L, going 2.0 innings, allowing five hits, two runs and one walk. Weyer was 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI while Long scored twice.

UW-L returns to action Friday, May 2 at the WIAC Tournament at UW-Stevens Point. The Eagles, the sixth-seed will face UW-Eau Claire, the third-seed, at 11 a.m.
