UW-L Second After First Day of WIAC Championships; Schetter Wins Long Jump

Eau Claire, Wis. – The UW-La Crosse women’s track & field team is in second-place after the first day of competition Friday at the WIAC Outdoor Championships at UW-Eau Claire. The Eagles have 67.0 team points while UW-Oshkosh is in first-place with 67.5.
UW-Eau Claire is third (50.5) followed by UW-River Falls (35.0), UW-Stout (16.0), UW-Superior (12.0), UW-Stevens Point (11.0), UW-Platteville (10.0) and UW-Whitewater (3.0).
In Friday's action, UW-L's Caitlin Schetter captured the long jump conference title (19-2 1/2) while teammates Katie Fondow placed second (17-10 3/4) and Krista Kopetsky third (17-9). Ashton May was eighth (17-1 1/2) in the long jump and Jamie Scott ninth (16-9 1/4).
The Eagles' Alecia Ellingstad was second (12-0 1/2) in the pole vault Friday while Chris Claussen was fourth (11-0 3/4). Kaitlyn Joyce and Tiffany Ness both tied for seventh (10-6 3/4) while Scott was 10th (10-6 3/4).
Other field results included Amanda Bly finished second in the javelin throw (109-4) for UW-L with teammate Christy Bohl sixth (101-2) and Megan Nitka eighth (99-4). Tina Schmidt finished ninth in the hammer throw (145-11) for UW-L.
On the track, Megan Johnson placed third (11:46.32) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with Mary Olson finishing eighth (11:51.84) and Rachel DeDeyn ninth (11:59.19). Jenna Gerten was third in the 10,000-meter run (38:21.37) while Kayla La Porte finished 10th (39:47.50). UW-L's 4x800-meter relay was fifth (9:42.61).
AnnMarie Glejf is in third (2,467 points) and Lauren Terry eighth (2,185) after four events in the heptathlon.
Advancing to Saturday's 100-meter dash final were four UW-L runners, including Katie Steingraeber (12.76), Cassie Grosse (12.86), Stephanie Lasko (12.87) and Kailey Charlton (12.91). The Eagles also had four advance in the 200-meter dash in Sarah Duchow (25.06), Schetter (25.71), Caitlin Wippermann (26.00) and Steingraeber (26.00).
In the 400-meter dash, Caitlin Perra (57.68), Danica Schaefer (58.18) and Ashley Pershing (59.15) advanced to Saturday's final. In the hurdle events, Claussen (15.28), Ellingstad (15.56) and Maggie May (15.71) advanced in the 100-meter hurdles while Abby Lien (1:03.40) and May (1:06.81) will run in the 400 hurdles final.
