Harriet McBryde Johnson is a longtime
activist in the struggle for social justice, especially
disability rights. As an attorney since 1985 in Charleston,
South Carolina, her solo practice emphasizes benefits and
civil rights claims for poor and working people with
disabilities. She is an author of both fiction and
non-fiction books as well as numerous articles. She has
received several honors and awards for her work. She has
given talks to varied audiences nationwide, exploring varied
aspects of disability, life, death, love, law, identity, and
politics. Her memoir is Too Late To Die Young; Nearly
True Tales from a Life. For the past 16 years she has
organized an annual protest against the Jerry Lewis Muscular
Dystrophy telethon on Labor Day. Her presentation will
focus on the rights of people with disabilities. |
