Karate Chops, Geishas, Nerds, & the Asian Invasion:
Asians & Asian Americans in the American Media

Covering the 1950s to the present, this talk addresses the stereotypes portrayed in the mainstream media. By taking a "humorous" look at how the American mainstream media has depicted Asians and Asian Americans as the "model minority" and the "forever foreigner" this talk hopes to shed light on the experiences of the Asian American.  Many Americans still strongly hold onto the belief that Asian Americans are the "model minority."  By taking a closer look at these stereotypes, Palmer hopes to show how these stereotypes have a negative impact upon the Asian American community. Most obviously, these lasting stereotypes have negatively impacted the Asian American identity. Furthermore, these stereotypes led to a significant rise in hate crimes against Asian Americans. In this presentation, he attempts to develop a deeper understanding of the Asian American experiences in the hopes to contribute to the overall dialogue on race in America.
