Elementary, middle, and secondary teachers will critically examine how discourse structures and formative assessment practices aligned with the Common Core State Standards  (CCSS) can elicit student thinking. Held in conjunction with the Wisconsin Mathematics Council’s Mathematics Proficiency for Every Student fall conference, this course will provide participants with the opportunity to engage in professional learning designed to deepen their understanding and build their capacity to lead professional learning around these effective classroom practices.

As part of this professional learning experience, participants will reflect on concepts learned and develop an action plan outlining steps for implementing discourse structures and formative assessment in their educational setting.

Course Objectives:

  • Participants will examine classroom structures designed to foster high quality student discourse.
  • Participants will examine the formative assessment process and the connection to student learning objectives.
  • Participants will demonstrate the applications of discourse structures and formative assessment to their own educational setting through the development of an action plan.
