OFF-Campus Cohort Programs

Exercise & Sport Science offers two master’s degree cohort programs in Physical Education Teaching and Sport Administration.

Important: The following information applies ONLY to the off-campus cohort programs.

Beginning fall of 2008 UW-La Crosse Exercise & Sport Science will offer two master’s programs with 3-year rotations of classes for students pursuing degrees in Physical Education Teaching and Sport Administration.

The Master of Science Exercise & Sport Science-Physical Education Teaching program will complete its current rotation in Appleton summer 2008. The new rotation for the program will begin in September 2008 at the WCTC, Pewaukee.

The Master of Science Exercise & Sport Science-Sport Administration program will complete its current rotation in Pewaukee summer 2008. The new rotation for Sport Administration will begin in September 2008 at the WCTC, Pewaukee.

About the Cohort Group
A cohort group brings together 20 students who enroll together, work through the curriculum together and graduate together. Cohorts have become more and more popular at many universities because of their benefits, such as:

• Personalized attention of a small college network but with the resources of a major university.
• Opportunities to collaborate, learn and grow with people who have similar professional goals.
• Build friendships and create professional and personal networks.
• And, studies show that students who enroll in collaborative learning environments are more likely than their peers to graduate.

When and Where do Cohorts Meet?
The program will be offered in Pewaukee for the Physical Education Teaching and Sport Administration options. The locations are determined based on requests from potential students, locations accessibility, etc. Our locations are posted to our Web site once they are determined. Two new cohorts will begin fall 2011 – sites will be determined sometime in 2010. Not only do our convenient locations make it easier for you to earn your master's degree, but the class times allow you to maintain your career and personal life. A cohort rotation is set up to allow students to graduate in three years. Classes are held in the evenings and/or on the weekends. Although the course curriculum has been scheduled to move students through the program in three years you may take up to seven years to complete your graduate degree.

The following guidelines may help you decide whether this program is for you.

Courses:

• Students admitted to the cohort group must agree to take classes in the sequence they are offered. Each class is offered only once or twice in a three-year rotation.
• Students in the cohort group who do not take classes in the sequence will be responsible for completing the course at the UW-L campus.
• Students in the cohort group must take at least one class per semester. Students will be dropped from the cohort group if they fail to complete two required courses at their site.
• During the summer, students will be required to take an elective AND a required course. This will allow students to complete the program and stay on target for graduation.

Registration:

• Students enrolled in the cohort will be allowed to pre-register in advance of regular registration. Students in the cohort group who do not pre-register will NOT be guaranteed a seat in class. Any open seat will be available during regular registration periods for students not in the cohort group. UW-L expects to have four extra seats for most classes offered for students who are not part of the cohort groups.
• To ensure the integrity of the program, overrides will not be offered when enrollment limits have been met.

Rigor:

• Both programs are research-based. Students should expect to spend quality time in their local library and use of the Internet to meet class requirements.

Sites are chosen because of the requests from prospective students in the area. If you have not graduated from the last cohort cycle 2005-2008 and need to continue on and complete coursework, please note the change in class location beginning in the fall 2008.

Both programs offer students the opportunity to join a cohort group which enables you to graduate at the end of the 3-year rotation (2008-2011).
