10:15-10:45 a.m. Donna Hoffman, MDDry Needling: A manual therapy technique for treatment of myofascial trigger points

Donna Hoffman, MD

Summary and Objectives:

Dry needling is a technique used in many countries primarily by physical therapists in the management of patients with myofascial pain and trigger points. Advantages of this technique include an immediate reduction in local, referred and widespread pain, restoration of range of motion and muscle activation patterns and normalization of the immediate chemical environment of active myofascial trigger points. After completion of this talk the listener should be able to:

  • Describe what exactly is a myofascial trigger point and how they develop
  • Describe how dry needling can be used as a tool in treating myofascial pain syndromes of the lower extremity

Evidenced Based Medicine: Are Certain LE Special Tests Valuable for Clinical Diagnosis?

Scott T. Doberstein, MS, ATC, LAT

Summary and Objectives:

A brief review of the literature pertaining to the diagnostic accuracy of some specific lower extremity clinical tests will be presented. The evidence based model will be the focus rather than traditional, anecdotal information passed along as fact.  Each participant will learn what works and what does not based on current research to date and a basic understanding what the statistics mean in a practical and/or clinical environment.

Shane McClinton, PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT, CSCS – Des Moines University Physical Therapy Clinic and Human Performance Laboratory

Summary and Objectives:

Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) is an increasingly popular intervention used in the physical therapy management of musculoskeletal conditions. In this presentation, the quantity, quality, and level of evidence of IASTM will be presented and the potential treatment responses discussed. Treatment techniques will be introduced in preparation for the laboratory session. Objectives:

  • List the level of evidence for conditions in which instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization has been utilized in the published literature.
  • Describe the potential mechanisms by which instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization can produce a treatment effect.

A Case for Conservatism: Non-Surgical Management of FAI

Matt Haberl, DPT, OCS, ATC, CSCS
Fellow in Training, American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists Sports Medicine

Summary and Objectives:

Femeroacetabular Impingement Syndrome (FAI) is a relatively new diagnosis with limited identifiable treatment options. Most common interventions include surgical management with little research investigating conservative treatment options. Therefore the goals of this discussion are to:

  • Provide a brief review of the literature regarding conservative treatment of patients with FAI
  • Provide a case example of conservative treatment in patients with FAI
  • Address the current controversies regarding the treatment of FAI

Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: Is surgical outcome what we think?

Suzanne Tanner, MD - Gundersen Lutheran Sports Medicine

Summary and Objectives:

Although many patients are initially asymptomatic after ACL reconstruction and appear to have a stable knee, closer scrutiny of data reveals that results may not be as ideal as is often assumed. Objectives will be to:

  • Examine biomechanical results after ACL reconstruction
  • Estimate rates of return to sports after ACL reconstruction.

March 24, 2012 (Saturday)  | Gundersen Lutheran Sports Medicine, Lower Level, Onalaska Clinic

Participants select one track. Athletic shorts and tank tops/sports bras are recommended for each lab.

Each lab section has a maximum capacity which will be observed in order to preserve opportunity for attendees to ask questions and get as much practice with instructed techniques as possible. Early registration for the symposium is the best way to ensure attendees get enrolled in the labs they most desire.

All labs are presented at the Gundersen Lutheran Onalaska Clinic – Lower Level. The free parking ramp located next to the clinic is the recommended lot for attendees. All attendees should access the clinic via the Sports Medicine entrance on the South side of the clinic. Maps to the clinic and specific lab locations will be included in the course materials provided on the first day of the symposium. Attendees only registered for Day 2 of the symposium may request these maps ahead of time if they are unfamiliar with the location of the clinic.
