Family History: Pass it On
Many people have an interest in family history, but don’t know where to begin. Others have collected photos and other materials, but don’t know what to do with them.
Here’s your chance to take a bite out of the family history “elephant.”
Taught by a personal historian and published author, participants learn the process of writing and preserving their family history. Writing exercises, interview techniques, incorporation of family “artifacts,” and an overview of publishing resources and formats are included.
After the sessions you will be on your way to a family treasure and legacy for generations to come.
- Session 1: Overview of the importance of collecting family history. Participants will identify goals and develop plans for their family history. In-class writing exercises and short assignments will be given based on individual goals.
- Session 2: The art of the interview. We’ll practice interviewing techniques that can uncover the treasures in family memories. Homework includes an interview.
- Session 3: Photos, memorabilia and other resources. We’ll talk about the progress made and the lessons from the interviews. We’ll look beyond words to the use of photos and other memorabilia. Students should bring 2-3 photos they would like to include in their book.
- Session 4: Putting it together. We’ll take the written stories, photos and memorabilia, and continue the creative process. Together, we will plan the final stages that complete this treasure.
