Psychology of Aging
(Core Gero Certificate Program)
What do elders need to have a good life?
What everyone needs: food, shelter and safety; touch, intimacy and belonging; efficacy and meaning.
Based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, this program explores the opportunities and challenges we encounter in aging. Coping strategies, sexuality, self image, interpersonal and family relationships, cognitive changes and mental health are included in the discussion.
We will pay special attention to the differences between normal, typical aging and pathological, disease-related conditions related to aging. The growing concerns of depression, suicide, and other mental health issues are also examined.
Course Objectives:
- Provide participants with research-based findings on the normal psychological processes of aging and the pathological processes.
- Increase participants’ empathy and understanding of aging and elders in diverse life circumstances.
- Encourage participants to apply information in personal, professional and public policy contexts.
Instructors:
- Sara Sullivan, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, UW-La Crosse Department of Psychology
- Mary Faherty, MS, Long term care consultant and educator
