THE PRESIDENT’S PIGEONHOLE

Picture of Amazon River basin. Some of you may have wondered about the activities of the LIR Board over the past year. In this report, I would like to explain what your board is doing and plans to do for the membership.

The membership on the board consists of all the officers (president, vice president, treasurer, and secretary, as well as the promotion and curriculum committee chairpersons, the LIR historian, the past president and the university liaison which is a member of the UW-L Continuing Education staff.) The Board meets four or five times a year to review the activities of the committees, the budget, correspondence, class enrollments and discusses ways to support and improve the operations of LIR. These meeting are open to the public and usually last about two hours and are held on campus. Dates and times for the meetings vary. Anyone interested in attending may call me at 608.788.0424 for dates and times of the meetings.

Last year, among other accomplishments, the Board succeeded in reducing the cost of field trips by subsidizing them. The money to do this came from a university foundation account set up by a donor to use the money for this purpose and others. In a similar way we were also able to subsidize the breakfast last May. At no additional cost to the membership we were able to provide a more substantial breakfast. We continue to explore ways to reduce the cost of membership and make it more affordable and available to persons who would like to belong to LIR but can’t afford the membership and course fees. If any of you have suggestions about how we can accomplish this let us know. We need your input.

In addition to these concerns the Board continues to maintain a relationship with other LIR groups throughout the state and in neighboring states. As an organization we are proud of our membership and the high quality of our programs. We continue to seek your input and help in evaluating what we are doing. Considering that our organization and the courses that are taught are all done by volunteers, it is amazing what we have accomplished.

The LIR board wants your input. We need your suggestions for our operations involving curriculum, membership, promoting the organization and policy decisions. To facilitate your input you may email me at: Altman3131@aol.com or phone me at 608.788.0424. You may be assured that your comments will always be presented and reviewed by the Board at our regular board meetings. The continued success of our organization depends upon all of us contributing ideas, suggestions and opinions about what LIR is doing, should be doing or should not be doing.
