Richard Kyte is
Director of the D. B. Reinhart Institute for Ethics in
Leadership and Professor of Philosophy at Viterbo University in
La Crosse, Wisconsin where he teaches a variety of ethics
courses dealing with issues in business, health care, law,
politics, the environment, art, and religion. He has published
and lectured widely on topics related to justice, forgiveness,
virtue, and the meaning of life.
Topic: Servant Leadership and the Common Good
In the 1970s Robert K. Greenleaf coined the phrase "servant
leadership" to describe the approach one takes to leadership
when the primary desire is to serve others. In the years since,
servant leadership has been adopted by organizations throughout
the world, including most of the companies that regularly make
Fortune magazine's top ten list of the best companies in America
to work for. This presentation will look at the history of
servant leadership, the principles that inform it, and some of
the inspiring examples of individuals and organizations who have
taken servant leadership to heart.
Tia Nelson is Executive
Secretary, Board of Commissioners of Public Lands, for the state
of Wisconsin. The oldest state agency, it manages 77,500 acres
of forests, trust funds worth more than $600 million and land
survey records going back to the 1830’s. One of Nelson’s focuses
in her position is working on forest fragmentation issues in
northern Wisconsin.
Topic: Earth Day and Beyond
The daughter of former Senator and pioneering conservationist
Gaylord Nelson , Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle has called Tia
Nelson “one of the great leaders of the environmental movement
in Wisconsin…carrying on her father’s legacy of land
conservation.” Tia is the past director of the Climate Change
Initiative of the Nature Conservancy.
Jeff Thompson, chief executive
officer and chairman of the boards of Gundersen Lutheran Health
System, and a practicing pediatric intensivist and
neonatologist. He is a founding member and past board chair of
the Wisconsin Collaborative for Healthcare Quality. Presently,
he is chairman of the board of the La Crosse Medical Health
