Employment Outlook
Participation and spectatorship of sport at all levels (intercollegiate, interscholastic, recreational sports, and professional sports) continues to increase. Career opportunities have paralleled this growth. The sport industry is the fourth largest growth industry in the United States. According to the Sport Business Journal, the sport industry is a $194.64 billion dollar a year industry, employing many people in all professional areas. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (United States Department of Labor, 2009), career opportunities related to sports are expected to increase 15 percent faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2016. It is projected that there will be 562,000 sport management related positions available by 2016. Beginning salary ranges in educational institutions may range from $18,000 to $25,000. Minor league professional sport starting positions will usually pay in the low 20’s while sporting goods jobs are often composed of basic salary plus commissions.
