This online course will explore common pediatric disabling conditions and diseases that affect infants, children and adolescents. It will look at how these conditions affect the child and the family and how chronically ill children are impacted in each stage of development. A variety of resources will be used to help explore the lived experience of a disabling condition, including: you-tube videos, blogs and websites and other personal accounts. 

This course meets the Child Life Council’s eligibility requirement to take the national certification examination in child life.

Instructor: Rachael Kaiser

Rachael is a certified child life specialist who has worked in outpatient surgery at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse since 2002. She proposed and implemented the child life position in the Outpatient Surgery Center and created the Teddy Bear Care Pre-Admission Tour Program, which provides tours to future pediatric surgical patients at Gundersen Lutheran. Rachael has a master’s degree in Family Studies; her breadth of knowledge and experience, combined with her positive facilitator presence in the online learning environment make this course highly sought after.
