MASTER'S LEVEL COUNSELING INTERNSHIPS

The Training Program

The Counseling and Testing Center master’s level internship in counseling is designed to provide training in a wide range of skills assisting trainees in the development of their own professional identities and interests. The program offers training and supervision in counseling, crisis intervention, outreach, and program development. A counseling intern must commit to a minimum of two days per week on site during the academic semester.

The program is based on a professional development model that is highly structured during the initial time on site. The Counseling Center has excellent facilities for using videotape as a primary training tool so all counseling interns are expected to videotape their sessions. The training program emphasizes personal growth, self-exploration, professional initiative, and a collaborative approach to learning. The Center has trained several counseling interns from the Counselor Education Program at Winona State University.

Training Activities

  • Direct Service A counseling intern would normally expect to conduct weekly intake sessions, carry an individual caseload, and may rotate through the on-call urgent care service. Facilitating groups and workshops are options based on the trainees experience, training, and interests.
  • Outreach and Consultation. The Counseling and Testing Center has developed outreach programs in the areas of anxiety management, alcohol education and prevention, and relationship violence. Counseling interns are expected to contribute to these efforts, and/or develop other outreach programs based on interest and expertise.
  • Supervision and Training. The Counseling and Testing Center has two licensed psychologists, a licensed professional counselor, and a certified clinical social worker. The intern is assigned a primary supervisor, but will be strongly encouraged to learn from all counseling staff. Philosophically, the Counseling Center staff is highly committed to helping interns develop their skills in an atmosphere of trust and respect.
