Students can only be officially admitted to the School of Education Department of Educational Studies (DES) Programs after the completion of 40 credits. Elementary - Middle Level Admission Requirements (formerly known as MC-EA program)

Students must have completed at least 24 credits (including earned and transfer credits) prior to application. Students can only be officially admitted to the School of Education Department of Educational Studies (DES) Programs after the completion of 40 credits. Students must apply and be accepted into the program prior to registration for certain education courses.

Early Childhood - Adolescence Admission Requirements

Students must have completed at least 40 credits (including earned and transfer credits) prior to application. Students can only be officially admitted to the School of Education Department of Educational Studies (DES) Programs after the completion of 40 credits. Students must apply and be accepted into the program prior to registration for certain education courses.

Special Education Program admission is competitive and based on space availability. Meeting the minimal requirements does not guarantee admission to the Special Education Program. Candidates may apply more than one time. Careful consideration must be given when applying after sophomore year, as applications in the junior year or later will delay the candidate's ability to complete the program in a timely manner. Program admission is required prior to registration for certain education courses. Prior to submitting an application for admission to the Special Education (SPE) Program at the Elem-ML, EA-A or EC-A developmental range, candidates must meet the following criteria:

Admission to a Major Teacher Education Program:

Candidates must be admitted to the Elem-ML, EA-A or EC-A major. Candidates may apply for admission to the SPE Program in the same semester as applying for admission to the Elem-ML, EA-A and EC-A programs or later semesters after major program admission has been earned.

    Curriculum Requirements:

Candidates must have completed at least 24 credits (including earned and transfer credits) prior to application. Candidates can only be officially admitted to the School of Education Department of Educational Studies (DES) Programs after the completion of 40 credits. Of the 24 credits earned candidates must have the following course requirements met:
    • Complete ENG 110/112 with a grade of "C" or higher
    • Complete or have concurrent enrollment in EFN 205, PSY 212, and EDS 303 (or equivalent coursework)
    • Complete 25 hours of experience time working directly with individuals with identified disabilities.  Age level of individuals is not specified (birth through adult); experience with teacher education certification developmental range is highly encouraged.

Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) Requirements:

Students must have earned a cumulative grade point average, outlined in the table below, in all academic work prior to applying for admission to the teacher education program.  This includes all transfer grade points averaged with residence (UW-La Crosse) grade points.

DES Program Cumulative Grade Point Average
    ECE 3.00
    Elem-ML 3.00
    EC-A 2.75
    SPE 3.00

    Basic Skills Test:

Entry into teacher education programs requires passing scores on one of the basic skills tests approved by the State Superintendent of the Department of Public Instruction. (See Basic Skills Test options memo).
This requirement should be completed within the first semester on campus. Students should check their Advisement Report in Wings for Basic Skills Test documentation to ensure they meet the requirements. Students should allow eight (8) weeks for the documentation of the official test scores to be sent from the testing organization to UWL and to be recorded.

    Extenuating Circumstances:

On occasion, a student may have significant extenuating circumstances that prevent them from meeting one of the admission criteria listed above. These applicants should provide a request for consideration with their online application. The request for consideration should include:

    1.  A detailed letter documenting why the applicant should still be considered for admission. Documentation should include evidence to support the request for consideration (example the reason GPA requirement was not met), and
    2.  Provide contact information for two individuals who can support the applicant's request for consideration and who can speak to the applicant's ability to be successful in the Department of Educational Studies Teacher Education Program. The information should include, at a minimum the following contact's information:
      1. Name
      2. Phone
      3. Address
      4. Email
      5. Indicate how the contact knows the applicant

The contact information of the two references should be added to the end of the request for consideration document. The student will upload the document with the online application.

    Application Procedures

Applications are accepted to DES programs via an online survey during the first 3 weeks of the Fall and Spring semesters. An admissions committee will meet to review applications and determine who will be accepted to the program.
