English Club Meetings

English Club and Sigma Tau Delta honor society meetings are Thursdays at 5:45pm in 331 Cartwright Center. New members are always welcome. See the English Club page for more information.

Speak!

Speak! is English Club's open mic night. Bring a story or poem that you wrote or written by someone you admire. You can even sing a sing, play an instrument, do an impression, rant, do a magic trick, tell a joke, yodel, gargle the alphabet backwards.

This takes place in the Cellar in the basement of the Cartwright Center at 8pm. Speak! will take place the first Wednesday of each month. Students and faculty are encouraged to at least attend if not read something.

Author Jesse Lee Kercheval to Visit La Crosse

Tuesday, November 4, 2008
5pm in the Ward Room

Author of The Alice Stories, Jesse Lee Kercheval will give a public reading and a book signing on November 4th. This event is free and open to the public.

Jesse Lee Kercheval writes non-fiction, fiction, and poetry. She teaches writing at the University of Wisconsin—Madison.

Her publications include: The Alice Stories, The Museum of Happiness, The Dogeater, Building Fiction, Space, Chartreuse, Dog Angel, and World as Dictionary.

Praise for The Alice Stories: “Sweet-natured and resilient, if a bit dizzy, Alice endears herself to readers by virtue of her buzzing inner life, smart and loopy humor, and unerring instinct for what matters. Over the course of 10 beautifully shaped, deeply moving, funny, and utterly surprising linked stories, Kercheval, in prose as sparkling as snow in sunlight, considers how quickly things can stop making sense and how sustaining goodness truly is.” —Booklist

This event is hosted by the UW-L English Department and the Creative Writing Program. Contact Matt Cashion at cashion.matt@uwlax.edu for information or accommodations.

Visit Kercheval's website for more information on her projects.

Author Firoozeh Dumas to Visit La Crosse

Tuesday, November 18, 2008
7pm in the REC

Author of Funny in Farsi, UW-L's first Common Reading Program book, Firoozeh Dumas visits campus in November to do a reading and signing.

Dumas conveys to her readers that "our commonalities outweigh our differences" and does it with humor.

Dumas grew up listening to her father, a former Fulbright Scholar, tell the colorful stories of his life--stories that would one day turn out to be part of her great success. She was born in Iran and moved to California at the age of seven. There, she grew up and attended UC Berkeley. In 2001, she decided to write these stories as a gift to her children. Her stories were published in 2003 and Funny in Farsi was on the SF Chronicle and LA Times bestseller lists. It was also a finalist for the PEN/USA award in 2004 and a finalist in 2005 for an Audie Award for best audio book.

This program is sponsored by Residence Life, University Centers, UW-L General Education Innovation Grant, and Campus Activities Board. Tickets go on sale October 28th and cost $2 for students, $5 for faculty and staff, and $8 for the general public.
