GRADUATE COUNCIL RECOMMENDATION
Graduate Faculty Membership for faculty and academic staff
who are retiring or resigning or who have retired or resigned.
Background. The current policy document on Graduate Faculty Membership does not contain specific language about faculty and/or academic staff who are retiring or resigning (see accompanying document). However, the language (below) appears on the HR website regarding retired faculty. This language appeared beginning in July 2000 and was likely the result of Graduate Council consensus or formal action. Since 2000, however, definitions/language for categories of Graduate Faculty Membership have been modified, including the addition of an Assistant category.
Language on HR website: “Upon recommendation of their department/unit head and college dean, retired members of the Graduate Faculty who will contribute special expertise to a graduate program (by teaching, supervising clinical internships, and/or serving as members of theses, seminar papers, graduate projects, or comprehensive examination committees) may be approved as associate graduate faculty members by the Graduate Council. If a faculty member retires with years remaining on an existing Graduate Faculty appointment (full or associate), the remaining years will carry over at the associate level. Appointments of retirees to the graduate Faculty can be made whether or not the retiree is employed by the university or volunteering. Application must be made to the Graduate Council and criteria cited in the Graduate Faculty policy must be addressed. All UW System and UW-L policies regarding employment of retired faculty apply. This policy is effective as of July 1, 2000.”
Graduate Council Recommendation. At the Graduate Council meeting (4/15/2005), a motion was made, seconded, and passed to adopt the new policy for Graduate Faculty members who have retired or resigned or who will be retiring or resigning—see below (12 yes, 0 no, 0 abstaining).
New Policy Language: Upon recommendation of their department/unit head and college dean, members of the Graduate Faculty who have retired or resigned but who will contribute special expertise to a graduate program (through internship/preceptorship supervision, specialized instruction, contribution of professional expertise and knowledge to a graduate program, and/or serving as members of thesis, seminar paper, graduate project, or comprehensive graduate examination committees) may be approved as affliate members of the graduate faculty by the Graduate Council. If a faculty member retires or resigns with years remaining on an existing Graduate Faculty appointment (full, associate, or assistant), the remaining years will carry over at affiliate membership.
Approval of this recommendation would:
o would continue to provide the affected faculty and academic staff with substantial opportunities to participate as graduate faculty at UW-L.
o would be straight forward for departments, the Graduate Council, and the Office of Graduate Studies to administer.
o would make the language in the policy parallel with the language in the current criteria for graduate faculty.
If approved by the Faculty Senate, this new language would be incorporated into the Graduate Faculty Policy documents and on the HR website.
