Attachment B                UW-L IAS Career Progression Policy - General Requirements and Titling Criteria

Developed in conjunction with the Provost’s Office and Human Resources

General Principles:

1.      For career progression tracking and eligibility purposes only, % appointment will be calculated in the following manner:  For an academic year  (comprised of two semesters) 75% and above = 100%; 40-74% = .50;  39% and below = 25%.   Individuals with other appointments at UW-L, will accrue based only on their IAS appointments.  This formula is based on % IAS appointment and is used for career progression only.  If percent appointments are at different levels for the two semesters of the academic year the average will be used to count toward accrual time. Exemptions which would not be counted as a break in service include, but are not limited to, maternity leave, family leave and medical leave.   The appointment percentage information used for accrual counting will be pulled from the October and March payroll data sets and no adjustments will be made after the pull.  Summer and J-term teaching does not count toward accrual.  Annual appointments will accrue at the percentage of the appointment rather than converted to an academic year percentage.

2.       IAS who are not employed at UW-L at the requisite appointment percentages for a period of 4 consecutive academic year semesters or more do not continue to bank time and previously banked time is forfeited.

3.      The minimum time in higher education teaching experience and time in title at UW-L merely represents the necessary experience needed for eligibility for consideration.  Career progression decisions will be based solely on the evidence of effective teaching and additional accomplishments at UW-L deemed appropriate for a higher title.

4.      The time in title recommendation for career progression refers to situations regarding “X years full-time teaching in higher education or other appropriate experience” – it is understood that this refers to 100% appointments only at other four-year higher education institutions.  The percent fragments associated with accrual are only for UW-L IAS and will be negotiated between the Dean and the IAS at time of first appointment).

5.      Deans have discretion in recommending multi-year contracts but will consider long term programmatic needs and IAS individuals in the higher titles first when requesting multi-year contracts.

For the first year of implementation:

-         The initial slotting of individuals into titles will conform to the criteria suggested below and will involve a recommendation from the chair (in collaboration with the IAS member) and Dean’s and Provost’s approval.

UW-L specifically excludes the use of the following Instructional Titles from this process:
